Not very many Colorado attorneys do mental health defense, partly because the contract amount is so low. The area of law is moderately compact but mental health defense can be a great challenge and a great reward. The clients are textbook difficult, and raise difficult ethical challenges innately because of the conflict of client loyalty and attorney compassion. Client loyalty must always win out, of course, and frequently the only way to "abide by the client's decisions concerning the objectives of representation"; RPC 1.2, is to attempt technical defenses, because the facts are so bad. See also RPC 1.14.
